Something that we enjoy doing together is drinking. While drinking is not always the best coping skill when it feels like the world is literally falling apart, making tasty cocktails on the cheap is a great way to class it up and leave your troubles behind.
Though we had planned to take a trip to the Caribbean at the end of April using mostly travel rewards. (Love travel reward hacking by the way, once we’re able to travel again we will talk more about how we do it.) That trip clearly got cancelled. This cocktail was our “we should be on a beach right now” consolation drink. I can attest it is best to feel your feelings and We were feeling those grief feelings all weekend long with this drink.
We are both big introverts so going out to bars stopped being an appetizing option even before quarantine. Also we decided we wanted to live the FI life and often don’t want to use up social energy that it takes to go out.
As quarantine and social distancing started we have found this cocktail goes perfectly with virtual Easter egg dying, virtual zoom hangouts playing Jackbox, home paint and sip nights, our classic pizza and a movie date night, and generally just hanging out at home all weekend every weekend.
Protip: If adding soda, remember that blending will cause it to get very bubbly. Use caution
Here’s the cost breakdown using the original cost divided by the amount in the recipe. (We shop at Aldis, Costco, and Schnucks so this is based on their prices. Schnucks is like a Safeway or Krueger’s.):
- Lemon Juice 16¢
- Lime Juice 35¢
- Coconut Milk (we usually buy in bulk from Costco; this is based on the Aldi cost) 27¢
- Berries $1.25
- 7Up 29¢
- Rum $3.20
The grand total per recipe is $5.52. This recipe makes 4 drinks. So $1.38 per drink. We also definitely used a bottom shelf rum so if you feel strongly that you want to splurge on a better rum that’s your choice.
The only bars I know where you can even get a crap beer for less than 5 bucks are hole in the wall cash only bars with lots of character and often totally worth it as an experience. We can’t go out to a bar without spending less that 45 bucks not including the late-night munchies that usually tag along even in our low cost of living area.
Cheers to social distancing!
We don’t get sponsors or anything and shop wherever convenient and cheap. Any opinions expressed are our own.
